ACC Launches AI Center of Excellence for In-House Counsel

WASHINGTON — The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC), the leading global organization for in-house legal professionals, has introduced the ACC AI Center of Excellence for In-House Counsel. This new initiative provides focused support for corporate lawyers dealing with the growing challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence in business.

Artificial intelligence is changing how companies operate, but legal regulations haven't kept up. Corporate lawyers now face complex issues involving intellectual property, data privacy, liability, and ethics related to AI. The Center acts as a hub offering strategic guidance, compliance tools, and practical best practices to help legal teams manage these challenges effectively.

The launch comes at a crucial time when many organizations are integrating AI technologies while facing scrutiny from regulators. ACC President and CEO Veta T. Richardson emphasized the Center’s role in helping legal teams not only manage risks but also guide responsible AI use within their companies. The initiative is built “by in-house counsel, for in-house counsel,” reinforcing ACC’s commitment to equip legal professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to lead with confidence.

Key Sections of the Center

The Center is organized into four main areas, each targeting a specific audience within the legal function:

  • In-House Lawyers – Provides strategies and resources to boost individual legal professionals’ efficiency with AI, covering tasks like legal research and contract review.
  • Law Department – Offers frameworks for governance, compliance, and AI integration at the department level to support smooth operations.
  • The Enterprise – Supports in-house counsel in advising their organizations on enterprise-wide AI risks, opportunities, and strategic planning.
  • The Legal Profession – Addresses issues such as transparency, intellectual property rights, and human oversight, highlighting the importance of responsible AI use aligned with legal ethics.

The Center will continuously update its content with insights from leading experts and real-world examples sourced from ACC’s global network. Peer-to-peer learning and shared case studies will keep the resources relevant as technology and legal frameworks evolve.

Shannon Klinger, ACC global board member and Chief Legal Officer at Moderna, noted that the Center aims to be a go-to resource where legal professionals can access practical use cases and actionable insights. By promoting collaboration, the initiative will help members manage risks and lead AI adoption responsibly within their organizations.

The Think Tank will utilize ACC’s extensive network of corporate lawyers across more than 100 countries. It will also collaborate with technology firms, law firms, and member organizations to provide comprehensive and up-to-date guidance that balances legal demands with business needs.
