AI is moving faster than marketing teams can absorb. Cannes made that clear: new tools everywhere, job cuts in the same breath as bigger AI bets, and almost no one steering the ethics conversation. If you wait for regulation, you will be reacting. Set the bar now and make trust your advantage.

The wild west (and why that's risky)

AI is boosting productivity, personalization and media efficiency. It's also amplifying bias, misinformation and low-quality "AI slop" that erodes audience trust. By 2026, up to 90% of online content could be AI-generated, according to Europol.

States are already drafting their own AI rules. If advertising waits for a patchwork of laws to dictate behavior, teams will end up chasing compliance instead of leading with clear standards.

What responsible AI looks like (practical and enforceable)

  • Human oversight: Keep people in the loop for approvals, red-teaming and exception handling. No fully autonomous campaign decisions in high-risk workflows.
  • Bias mitigation: Test for skew on protected attributes, use representative test sets and set thresholds for fairness. Retrain or restrict use when thresholds are missed.
  • Data and IT controls: Minimize PII, enforce least-privilege access, encrypt data in transit/at rest and set strict retention. Log every model interaction that touches customer data.
  • Transparency and disclosure: Document model purpose, data sources and known limits. Label AI-generated content and disclose AI assistance in ad production when material.
  • Evaluation and monitoring: Define success metrics, run pre-launch tests, track drift in production and build feedback loops for users and clients.
  • Content provenance: Watermark or attach provenance metadata (e.g., C2PA) for generated assets to support brand safety and authenticity checks.

Certification: external proof beats internal promises

Internal policies are necessary but not sufficient. Third-party validation shows clients and partners that your systems meet credible standards. Look to frameworks like ISO/IEC 42001 (AI management systems), and independent evaluators such as the Alliance for Audited Media (AAM) or TrustArc for verifiable audits.

Certification signals accountability. In a market built on trust, that signal converts.

A 90-day plan for CMOs and agency leads

  • Days 0-30: Inventory every AI use case across media, creative, analytics and customer service. Rank by risk (data sensitivity, customer impact, brand risk). Assign an executive owner and a cross-functional council.
  • Days 31-60: Ship a Responsible AI policy with clear do/don't rules. Launch bias testing, data minimization and human-in-the-loop checkpoints for high-risk flows. Roll out a vendor questionnaire covering data use, safety, bias and logs.
  • Days 61-90: Publish an AI use transparency page. Stand up monitoring dashboards (quality, bias, hallucination/error rates, drift). Start an external certification roadmap and train teams on the policy and escalation paths.

Use AI where it wins - with guardrails

  • Media buying: Use AI for bid optimization and pacing, but cap autonomy on new channels or sensitive audiences. Require human review for major budget shifts.
  • Creative production: Generate variants fast, then human-edit for tone, claims and brand safety. Label assisted assets and track performance by source.
  • Customer interactions: AI handles FAQs; humans handle edge cases and complaints. Log escalations and review transcripts for bias and quality.
  • Measurement: Use AI to detect anomalies and fraud, but validate with independent tools and audits before acting on large spend decisions.

Lead now or play catch-up later

AI is not waiting. Set clear standards, prove them with third-party validation and communicate openly. The brands and platforms that do this will win trust while others scramble.
