Africa’s AI Skills Gap: Insights from SAP’s Latest Report
SAP’s new report, Africa’s AI Skills Readiness Revealed, sheds light on how African companies are adjusting their workforce strategies to meet rising demands for Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills. The research focuses on mid-size and enterprise companies in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, providing a clear picture of current challenges and priorities heading into 2025.
AI Skills Demand Is Set to Surge
Every company surveyed anticipates a higher demand for AI skills this year. The majority — six out of ten — rate AI skills as critical to their success. However, the shortage of qualified AI talent is already causing tangible setbacks. According to the report, 90% of businesses have experienced negative outcomes such as project delays, stalled innovation, and missed opportunities due to this skills gap.
Specifically, 85% of companies prioritize AI development skills, and 83% focus on Generative AI capabilities. To address this, two-thirds are launching career development programs aimed at reskilling and upskilling their workforce in AI specialties.
Cybersecurity Remains a Top Priority
While AI skills grab headlines, cybersecurity skills are the most in-demand tech expertise overall. The report notes an increase from 63% to 86% of companies emphasizing cybersecurity importance since last year. This shift aligns with Africa’s growing digital economy and the surge in online users accessing both public and private services.
Workplace Expectations and Hiring Criteria Have Shifted
Employers now face new challenges in workforce management. Eight out of ten organizations say supporting requests for hybrid or remote work is their top skills-related issue, a jump from just 32% in previous surveys.
Hiring priorities have also evolved. Affordability of candidates is now the most important factor, followed closely by adaptability. This reflects the need for employees who can learn new skills quickly and keep pace with AI-driven changes.
Upskilling and Reskilling Take Center Stage
Reskilling is a key focus for 38% of companies, while 48% prioritize upskilling current employees. However, two-thirds of organizations report challenges in helping staff understand the necessity of this reskilling effort.
Training Programs Are Increasing, But Budgets Are Shrinking
Most African companies are intensifying their training efforts. Ninety-four percent now provide monthly training opportunities, up from 74% last year. More companies also offer on-demand training options throughout the year.
Despite this, the portion of IT and HR budgets dedicated to skills development has declined. The report warns that underinvesting in training risks leaving companies behind as AI and other technologies advance.
Takeaway for IT and Development Professionals
The AI skills gap in Africa is real and growing. If you’re in IT or development, focusing on AI, generative AI, and cybersecurity skills will be essential. Employers are not only looking for technical expertise but also adaptability and cost-effectiveness in hiring.
Consider engaging in targeted AI training and certification to stay competitive. Resources like Complete AI Training’s latest courses offer practical paths to build these in-demand skills.
