Healthcare Provider Adopts AI to Reduce Paperwork Burden
Guernsey's Medical Specialist Group (MSG) is implementing an AI assistant named Heidi to help doctors minimize time spent on administrative tasks. Heidi listens during patient appointments, takes notes, and drafts documents like referral letters and patient summaries for doctors to review and approve.
Currently, doctors spend about 40% of their time writing and checking notes, letters, and reports. While necessary, this paperwork limits the time available for direct patient care. By using Heidi, MSG aims to free up doctors' schedules, enabling them to see more patients and potentially reduce waiting times.
Careful Integration of AI in Medical Practice
Dr Farid Fouladinejad, CEO of MSG, emphasizes the importance of a cautious and sensible approach to introducing AI in medicine. The pilot phase in June involved 10 consultants and their administrative staff, and the technology is now being rolled out gradually across outpatient consultations.
One of the key benefits is that Heidi works quietly in the background via a web browser or an app on the doctor's phone, so patients won't notice its presence during consultations. Instead, the interaction will feel more focused, without the distraction of doctors typing or handwriting notes.
Improving Patient Experience and Clinical Efficiency
Dr Michelle Le Cheminant highlights that this transition reflects natural progress in medical practice—similar to past shifts from dictaphones to typewriters. The goal is to enhance patient experience by allowing doctors to concentrate more fully on the consultation itself.
With Heidi handling documentation, doctors can maintain attention on patients rather than on administrative tasks. This change is expected to create a smoother clinic experience for both healthcare professionals and patients alike.
