Welsh Healthcare Staff to Receive AI Training via New Chatbot Mentor

An AI chatbot mentor named HALI (Healthcare AI Learning Interface) is set to launch within the Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) education portal, Y Ty Dysgu. Its purpose is to help Welsh healthcare professionals learn how to use AI safely and effectively, addressing the rising use of AI in healthcare without enough practical training.

HALI will go live in autumn 2025 and offers healthcare workers a chance to interact with AI in a hands-on way. Upon first use, users select their role—such as radiographer, service manager, or student nurse—and choose one of five archetypes that best fits their responsibilities. They can then ask HALI about AI applications relevant to their daily tasks, from weekend rota planning to diabetic retinopathy screening.

Practical, Role-Specific AI Guidance

Every response from HALI highlights the limitations of AI and discusses associated risks and challenges, ensuring users remain aware of ethical principles like transparency and bias. The chatbot supports staff in making informed decisions focused on patient care while introducing AI tools that could improve workflows and outcomes.

Dr Alexander Aubrey, clinical lead for AI at HEIW, explained that healthcare professionals need preparation for how AI will shape healthcare delivery. HALI is designed to make AI accessible and meaningful for all healthcare roles, helping staff provide smarter, safer, and more responsive care.

Building a Digitally Ready Workforce

HALI has completed internal user-acceptance testing and will soon launch alongside a social media campaign titled “Using AI to Learn AI.” HEIW plans to use anonymised data from HALI interactions to identify knowledge gaps. This will inform targeted professional development, including webinars and specialist training sessions.

Future plans include creating a Community of Practice and Innovation Hub. This platform will bring health professionals together to develop peer-reviewed pilot projects based on insights gained from using HALI.

Supporting AI Education in NHS Wales

Prior to HALI, HEIW introduced a bite-sized Foundations in AI course available on Y Ty Dysgu. Since its soft launch in April 2025, over 600 healthcare professionals have accessed this course, which breaks down AI concepts like natural-language processing and computer vision. It also covers transparency, data protection, and the human-in-the-loop principle.

NHS Wales healthcare staff can create a free account on Y Ty Dysgu to take this foundational course and prepare for the upcoming HALI launch. This initiative reflects recommendations from HEIW’s AI Education and Skills Landscape Review, which called for safe, practical AI learning environments for all healthcare workers.

Get Involved

Healthcare professionals interested in using HALI are encouraged to join the waiting list to be among the first to access the chatbot when it launches later this year.
