Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Launches AI City Task Force

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is set to establish a task force dedicated to developing the 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) City,' a key part of the new government's national agenda. On the 5th, the Ministry will hold a kickoff meeting to bring together departments involved in urban planning, architecture, spatial information, and mobility. This task force will also collaborate with specialized organizations including the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS), Architecture & Urban Research Institute (AURI), The Korea Transport Institute (KOTI), Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH), and Korea Land and Geospatial InformatiX Corporation (LX).

What is an AI City?

The AI City is envisioned as a next-generation urban environment that applies artificial intelligence to city management and services, going beyond traditional smart city concepts. Earlier smart city initiatives centered on improving citizen convenience by implementing services like bus information systems and urban CCTV integration, alongside gathering urban data.

In contrast, the AI City will utilize AI-driven analysis of urban data to anticipate and address issues related to traffic, energy, and safety before they arise. This approach aims to provide personalized services to each resident across multiple sectors, enhancing overall city life.

Focus of the Task Force

  • Define strategies for the AI City project launch
  • Develop demonstration cities that integrate urban planning, architecture, spatial data, and transportation
  • Exchange ideas on policy directions considering rapid advancements in AI technology

The task force's first meeting will set the foundation for these efforts, emphasizing collaboration across relevant fields to ensure a comprehensive approach.

Government Commitment and Budget

As part of the AI transformation initiative (AX·AI Transformation), the Ministry plans to prioritize AI City development as a national agenda. The goal is to position Korea as a leader in the global AI market while improving citizens’ quality of life.

A budget of 4 billion won has been allocated in next year’s government budget to select AI-specialized demonstration cities and establish detailed project plans. This funding reflects the commitment to move swiftly and deliver tangible benefits to residents.

Leadership Perspective

Lee Sang-joo, head of the Ministry’s Urban Policy Division, described the AI City as a new model where AI actively manages urban planning and operations. He emphasized the Ministry’s intent to produce quick results that citizens can experience firsthand, realizing the vision of a uniquely Korean AI City.

For IT and development professionals, this initiative signals growing opportunities to engage with AI applications in urban infrastructure, data integration, and mobility solutions. Staying informed and skilled in AI technologies will be crucial to contribute effectively to such projects.
