AI for Development Workshop in Bhutan
The United Arab Emirates and the Royal Government of Bhutan, together with the Eurasia Group and G42, recently hosted a two-day workshop titled “AI for Development” in Thimphu, Bhutan. The event brought together key leaders, including Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Foreign Minister Lyonpo D.N. Dhungyel, and opened with the Marchang Ceremony, honoring Bhutan’s cultural heritage.
The workshop aimed to identify AI solutions that address Bhutan’s unique development needs. It reflects the UAE’s foreign policy approach, which emphasizes technology-driven diplomacy and partnerships, especially within the Global South.

Omran Sharaf, Assistant Minister for Advanced Science and Technology in the UAE, highlighted the commitment behind the initiative: “This effort demonstrates the UAE’s dedication to technological diplomacy by applying AI and technology to global development challenges. We seek solutions that fit national priorities and promote sustainable progress.”
Dr. Abdulnasser Alshaali, UAE Non-resident Ambassador to Bhutan, noted the broader vision of the collaboration: “The UAE is proud to partner with Bhutan on scalable tech solutions, spanning entrepreneurship to agriculture, supporting inclusive growth and the UN SDGs across the Global South.”
Jigme Tenzing, Secretary of Bhutan’s GovTech Agency, emphasized AI’s transformative potential: “AI offers more than convenience; it can drive meaningful and inclusive socio-economic change. This workshop is an important step to explore AI’s role in Bhutan’s development, consistent with our values and priorities.”

The UAE delegation also met with His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, who praised the UAE’s technological advancements, including in space, and recognized opportunities for future collaboration emerging from the workshop.
This event strengthens the UAE’s position as a strategic partner supporting emerging technologies and capacity building in the Global South.
