AI Collaboration Streamlines Heathrow Operations and Boosts On-Time Performance

AI Firms Partner with Heathrow to Streamline Aircraft Ground Operations

Heathrow Airport is advancing its ground operations across Terminals 2, 3, and 5 by integrating AI technology to speed up and optimize aircraft turnaround processes. This initiative is part of a strategic collaboration with IAG and Assaia, focusing on improving gate efficiency and supporting the airport’s growing passenger demand.

The core technology driving this upgrade is Assaia’s ApronAI, an AI-powered video analytics platform. ApronAI monitors critical turnaround activities such as baggage unloading, refuelling, and boarding in real time. These insights enable Heathrow and its airline partners, including British Airways, to reduce delays and make operations more predictable.

Enhancing On-Time Performance Without New Infrastructure

Christiaan Hen, CEO of Assaia, highlighted how Heathrow is setting a new standard by using intelligent technology to address operational pressures and prepare for future growth. By implementing ApronAI across multiple terminals, the airport improves on-time departures and arrivals, maximizes gate availability, and enhances the overall passenger experience without expanding physical infrastructure.

The initial phase at Terminal 5 involved installing 52 cameras on 17 stands. Each stand is monitored by about three cameras covering the stand and jetty areas. This setup tracks the tasks directly affecting aircraft readiness. The full rollout will extend to 116 gates across the three terminals, with over 540 cameras deployed.

Collaborative Development and Operational Benefits

Sarah Owen, Business Development Director at Assaia, explained that the partnership began through the IAGi Accelerator Programme, which allowed the company to test and refine ApronAI in real operational settings. IAG’s equity investment and the extension of the system alongside British Airways at Terminal 5 reflect the growing confidence in this technology.

ApronAI delivers real-time data that helps reduce aircraft idle time and unnecessary fuel consumption, supporting both operational efficiency and environmental goals. This collaboration demonstrates how integrated technology can provide immediate, measurable improvements in airport operations.

Looking Ahead: AI and Computer Vision in Airport Operations

Neil Pritchard, Heathrow’s Programme Lead, emphasized that investing in AI and computer vision technology improves daily operational planning and predictability. The partnership between Heathrow, Assaia, and airline partners is a clear example of how technology-driven collaboration can deliver tangible benefits today while preparing the airport for future demands.
