AI-Driven Innovation in Tshwane’s Hospitality Sector

During the Tshwane Tourism Association’s Annual General Meeting on June 19 in Pretoria, four hoteliers introduced an AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot aimed at improving communication within the hospitality industry.

This chatbot acts as a 24/7 concierge, replacing formal front desk interactions with a more approachable and friendly communication channel. It also enables hotels to send targeted marketing messages and follow-ups directly through WhatsApp, creating a personalized guest experience that is both efficient and engaging.

Association Chairperson Susan Marais emphasized the chatbot’s value, stating it offers a faster, friendlier way to keep guests informed and comfortable throughout their stay.

Upcoming Initiatives for 2026

The Tshwane Tourism Association has outlined several key projects to boost the local tourism and hospitality environment in the coming year:

  • Enhancing safety measures by reinforcing the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the metro and police
  • Expanding the grading system for accommodation providers to raise service standards across the board
  • Promoting township tourism through cultural experiences and curated local routes
  • Launching an urban heritage circuit featuring guided city walks focused on storytelling
  • Improving transport connectivity between hotels, attractions, and transit hubs

Focus on Training and Community Engagement

Post-COVID hospitality training remains a priority, with the Association actively supporting skills development. They have successfully distributed over 6,000 Official Tshwane Guides to tourists and locals alike. The year’s showcase event at the CSIR attracted over 60 exhibitors and 400 visitors, highlighting the sector’s resilience and community interest.

Outreach efforts have expanded to local universities to encourage tourism career pathways. Safety continues to be a focus, supported by regular sessions with metro police and the Tshwane safety app.

Looking Ahead: Key Dates and Celebrations

The 25th anniversary of the Official Tshwane Guide will be celebrated with a new edition set for release in 2026. Additionally, the Tshwane Tourism Awards are scheduled for August 16 at Batter Boys Village, recognizing outstanding achievements in events, sustainability, hospitality, and innovation.

These initiatives promise practical benefits for hospitality professionals focused on improving guest experiences and operational excellence.
