A Dutch company has developed a way to use artificial intelligence (AI) to record dreams. Modem Works, based in Amsterdam, claims their Dream Recorder can capture dreams in “ultra-low definition” and in any language. The process is simple: wake up, speak your dream aloud, and watch it come to life as a dreamscape in the visual style you choose.
How Does It Work?
Modem Works describes the project as “Do-It-Yourself by Design.” Users download open-source code, gather the necessary hardware, 3D print the Dream Recorder’s shell, and assemble the device themselves. Once ready, a double tap starts recording the user recalling their dream. After finishing, the AI generates the dream visuals, which can then be played back with another tap. The device stores up to eight dreams on its 8-gigabyte processor.
The company has published the open-source code on Github along with a list of required components and where to buy them. Parts include an HDMI screen, an 8-gigabyte processor, a micro SD card, and a USB microphone. Building the Dream Recorder costs approximately €285.
The device also requires access to APIs from OpenAI and LumaLabs, an AI video generation company, to create the dream images. The estimated cost per dream is under $0.15 depending on image quality.

This project is one of several recent attempts to map dreams using AI. In 2023, Japan’s ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories developed an AI system that visualises dreams from MRI scans with about 60% accuracy. Another study from the National University of Singapore and the Chinese University of Hong Kong reported similar findings the same year.
