Government Supports AI to Reduce Strain on UK Electricity Grid

The UK government has launched a £4 million fund to encourage the development of AI and digital technologies aimed at shifting up to 2 gigawatts (GW) of electricity demand away from peak times by 2030. This initiative targets lower energy costs, decreased reliance on fossil fuels, and improved grid resilience.

Science minister Lord Vallance introduced this challenge as part of the new R&D Missions Accelerator Programme, which has backing of £500 million. Over the next year, the initial funding will focus on flexible demand solutions such as predictive energy use algorithms and smart electric vehicle (EV) charging systems.

Reducing Peak Demand to Cut Costs and Emissions

During peak periods, especially early evenings, the UK grid often depends on gas-fired power stations that are costly and polluting. Shifting 2GW of demand—equivalent to the electricity used by approximately 1.5 million homes—could reduce this dependence. The move promises long-term savings for consumers and strengthens energy security.

Lord Vallance described the challenge as a “real-world mission with real-world impact,” urging businesses, universities, and researchers across the UK to contribute solutions that lower energy bills and reduce fossil fuel reliance.

AI, Automation, and Demand Flexibility

  • AI can analyse smart meter data combined with weather forecasts to predict electricity demand days in advance.
  • Automated building management systems could adjust heating or cooling when cleaner, cheaper energy is available.
  • Parked EVs might serve as distributed storage, charging during low-cost periods and supplying energy back to the grid when demand peaks.

The goal is to drive practical advancements in AI and energy technologies, focusing on outcomes that deliver measurable benefits rather than purely theoretical research.

Setting Clear Targets for R&D Funding

The Clean Energy: 2GW Peak Time Flexibility challenge marks the first time the government has set a specific performance target tied to research and development funding. The mission aims to shift gigawatts of demand by 2030 and is delivered by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) in collaboration with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).

Backing from National Grid and Energy Authorities

Key organisations such as National Grid, Ofgem, and the National Energy System Operator (NESO) have expressed support for the programme. They highlight the importance of decarbonising the grid and avoiding the need for expensive new infrastructure.

NESO’s Demand Flexibility Service already has nearly 2 million household participants, rewarding them for shifting electricity use outside peak times. Shubhi Rajnish, CIO at NESO, stated: “Smart innovation can make a real difference. AI optimisation of electricity usage will help improve energy security and reduce costs.”

From Research to Market

The first phase of funding runs through April 2026 and will focus on modelling, simulation, scaling existing solutions, and real-world testing. The government aims to accelerate market readiness so promising technologies can move beyond the lab and into practical use.

Digital Catapult, a delivery partner, noted the project will optimise energy efficiency for both businesses and consumers. Sonia Brown from National Grid described it as “a vital step toward a more secure, affordable and clean energy future.”
