Union Education Minister Highlights AI Education for School Children
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan urged educationists to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into school curricula by developing age-appropriate, AI-embedded textbooks. Speaking at the launch of the Bharatiya Bhasha Summer Camps and new primers in Indian languages, he stressed the importance of connecting technology like AI and machine learning (ML) with Indian languages to amplify learning outcomes.
"From this year itself, we have to connect Indian school children with AI education," Pradhan said. "We need an exponential jump, not just incremental reform."
Promoting Indian Languages Through Technology
Pradhan emphasized the value of studying in one’s mother tongue, noting that it strengthens foundational understanding. He encouraged exploring innovative approaches beyond traditional methods to promote Indian languages. With market forces increasingly leveraging regional languages, the time is ripe to blend language education with technology.
He pointed to India's successes in space and defense technologies—Chandrayaan, Akash, and BrahMos—as evidence of the strength of the education system. Pradhan also highlighted the revamped Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF), which aligns research efforts with national priorities and aims to involve all sections of society.
“Under the National Education Policy, we have to reach the new generation by connecting the depth of Indian languages with technology,” he added. He expressed confidence that these initiatives will soon extend to every district and school across the country.
Mother Tongue Education and National Unity
Pradhan praised the achievement of Jiya Kumari from Bihar, who scored 93 marks in Tamil for her class 10 examination despite growing up in Tamil Nadu. Her success challenges divisive attitudes related to language and underscores the value of multilingual education.
"To make India a developed nation and the world's number one economy, we must promote mother tongue education at least up to class 8," he said.
The article also touches on ongoing disagreements between the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre regarding the implementation of the three-language formula in the new education policy.
