Film on AI Labor and Representation Launches Global Impact Tour

"Humans in the Loop," a documentary directed by Aranya Sahay, began its Global Impact Tour this week in New York. The inaugural event at Parsons School of Design examined how human values shape AI development and who benefits from AI systems.

The film focuses on two overlooked aspects of AI: the labor that trains these systems and the communities absent from the data that powers them. When datasets reflect dominant languages and majority narratives, entire cultures become digitally invisible.

What Gets Left Out

Indigenous knowledge systems, oral traditions, and local dialects often contain practical insights on sustainability and governance. Yet they rarely appear in the training data for AI systems. This exclusion shapes what future AI can understand and serve.

The film argues these knowledge systems are not peripheral to AI development-they are central to building ethical, inclusive technologies.

Where the Film Has Been Seen

Sahay's work has already influenced policy discussions. It was the sole pre-conference screening at the 23rd Harvard India Conference and appeared at the India AI Impact Summit, hosted by the Gates Foundation and Karya.

The film received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars and appeared on The New York Times' list of top five international films on streaming. It is available on Netflix.

What Comes Next

The Global Impact Tour will bring screenings, policy dialogues, and leadership forums to governments, technology companies, universities, and international institutions. Organizations can host screenings with discussions or incorporate the film into AI and technology forums.

Priya Samant, the film's Impact Advisor, said: "Ensuring that this future remains inclusive, responsible, and human-centered is a global responsibility."
