Introducing AI for Science: A New Open-Access Journal Focused on Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming scientific research across diverse fields, from drug discovery to quantum computing. Recognizing this shift, IOP Publishing and the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory in China have launched AI for Science (AI4S), a new diamond open-access journal dedicated to publishing high-quality research on AI’s role in science.

This interdisciplinary journal aims to publish original research, reviews, and perspectives that highlight AI’s applications and influence on scientific innovation. As AI grows in importance, AI4S offers a platform for scientists to share their latest findings and methodologies.

Why AI4S Matters Now

AI research has surged, growing almost ten times faster than general scientific output over the last five years. This reflects AI’s increasing integration into scientific workflows, helping researchers analyze large datasets, accelerate simulations, and explore patterns that were previously difficult to detect.

Gian-Marco Rignanese, editor-in-chief of AI4S and researcher at École Polytechnique de Louvain, emphasizes that AI changes how science is conducted. He notes that generative AI and language models are shifting how researchers engage with scientific literature, making it easier to extract meaningful insights.

Building a Community Around AI in Science

Co-led by editor-in-chief Weihua Wang from the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory, AI4S seeks to create a global forum where researchers can connect and collaborate on AI-driven science. Wang highlights the journal’s role in fostering communication and accelerating progress in this fast-growing area.

The Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory is a leading research institute focusing on advanced materials and AI. Its support allows AI4S to waive publication fees from 2025 to 2027, making it easier for researchers worldwide to publish their work openly.

Scope and Standards

The journal covers a broad range of topics, including:

  • AI algorithms tailored for scientific applications
  • AI software and research tools
  • Development of AI-ready datasets
  • Embodied AI systems

These areas bridge AI technology with fields such as materials science, biology, and chemistry.

AI4S is committed to a high-quality, efficient author experience. Manuscripts undergo review by an international editorial board and a 22-member advisory board of leading experts. Accepted articles are published within 24 hours and receive a citable digital object identifier (DOI).

Context in the Broader AI Publishing Landscape

AI4S joins other specialized journals in the IOP Machine Learning Series, including titles focused on engineering, earth sciences, and health. This addition reflects the growing recognition of AI as a key approach in scientific research.

With increasing funding from organizations like the US Department of Energy and National Science Foundation, as well as growing AI initiatives in China, AI4S arrives at a pivotal moment for the field.

For researchers interested in developing AI skills to contribute to this evolving field, exploring comprehensive training resources can be valuable. Platforms such as Complete AI Training offer courses covering various AI applications relevant to scientific research.
