The Rapid Development of AI Technology in Indonesia

JAKARTA – Artificial intelligence (AI) technology in Indonesia is advancing at an impressive pace. From traditional AI to generative AI (GenAI) and now AI Agentics, these developments create both challenges and opportunities for Indonesian businesses and tech players.

Anthony Amni, Country Manager of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Indonesia, explained during a media briefing at the 2025 AWS Summit that AI models, especially large language models (LLMs), are evolving swiftly—sometimes with new iterations every two weeks. The progression now includes AI agents, expanding the scope of AI applications.

Despite the speed of these changes, Anthony believes Indonesian companies and startups are keeping up well. "Many companies and startups in Indonesia have adapted quickly," he noted, highlighting successful examples such as Halodoc, Traveloka, and Meetings.ai. The latter has expanded its use to over ten countries, including the United States.

Ensuring Technology Availability and Readiness

Anthony stresses that alongside adopting AI technology, it’s crucial to ensure that the necessary infrastructure and market readiness are in place. AWS provides platforms that enable industries to adopt the latest AI tools efficiently.

He compared AWS’s approach to a supermarket, offering customers a broad selection of AI models rather than forcing the use of a single proprietary solution. For instance, Amazon Bedrock supports models from various providers like Meta’s Llama, Anthropic, and DeepSek. This flexibility allows companies to remain relevant without overhauling their entire systems.

Respecting Data Sovereignty and Building Human Resources

Respect for Indonesia’s data sovereignty is a priority for AWS. Anthony emphasized the shared responsibility to prepare human resources to utilize new technology effectively once it becomes available.

For IT and development professionals, this means staying informed about AI advancements and exploring how to integrate diverse AI models into existing systems. This approach supports innovation without sacrificing compliance or operational stability.
