Across the US, AI has moved from a side project to a core business priority. Roles are being redefined while workloads climb, and employees feel the squeeze. New research points to three levers that will define the next era of talent: continuous education, greater flexibility, and practical AI literacy.

As one leader put it, "AI is rewriting job descriptions fast… employers who invest in education benefits and AI training now will build resilient, innovative teams." That's the signal. The question for education leaders is how to operationalize it-at speed, with clarity, and with clear ROI.

AI skills demand is rising as workloads intensify

According to the 2025 EdAssist by Bright Horizons Education Index, 42% of employees expect AI to significantly change their role in the next year, yet only 17% use AI frequently today. Pressure to learn is spiking: 32% feel pushed to pick up new skills because of AI, up from 26% in 2024.

Stress is real: 81% report being asked to take on more work, and 80% are expected to deliver faster. AI can reduce that strain, but without structured training, most employees won't know where to start-or how to use it safely and effectively.

Training flips uncertainty into confidence

When employers provide AI training, adoption jumps to 76%. Those with access to training feel far more prepared (84%) than those without it (48%).

The data is clear: education benefits pay off. But cost is a blocker. 48% avoid further education due to fear of student debt, and 34% say they can't afford any more loans. Without affordable, employer-backed options, career mobility stalls.

Employees reward employers who invest in learning. 85% say they'd be more loyal to employers who support continuing education, and 86% would choose a job that offers it over one that doesn't. 82% say employer-backed learning is crucial, and 29% say it's essential to do their job well.

Loan support matters too-74% would be more loyal if their employer helped pay down student loans. Access to AI training also boosts both usage and retention: 55% are more likely to stay if AI training or certification is available, and 76% use AI with training versus 25% without.

What education and L&D leaders should do now

  • Map AI exposure by role and create clear, role-based learning paths (AI basics, tool safety, workflow integration, and evaluation).
  • Build short-form, stackable modules that fit busy schedules. Protect time for learning to prevent burnout.
  • Launch AI office hours, coaching, and communities of practice to turn one-off courses into sustained capability.
  • Offer certification routes and recognize skills in performance, pay, and career progression.
  • Reduce financial barriers with tuition support, debt-conscious programs, and loan repayment assistance.
  • Measure impact: track adoption, time saved, error rates, and employee confidence by team and role.
