Hospital Implements AI to Speed Up Stroke Diagnosis
Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley has introduced AI technology to accelerate diagnosis for stroke patients. Since May 2024, the hospital’s stroke unit has been using RapidAI, a tool that provides instant access to diagnostic imaging. This allows clinicians to make quicker decisions and start treatment sooner.
One patient who benefited was Patrick Potter from Stourbridge. After suffering a brain bleed, his scan was immediately sent to his consultant’s mobile phone. This fast communication led to quicker diagnosis and treatment, critical in stroke care where every minute counts. Mr Potter described the technology as "absolutely brilliant," noting the rapid reassurance and care he received.
Care Minister Highlights Life-Saving Potential
Care Minister Stephen Kinnock visited Russells Hall Hospital and witnessed the AI system in action. He emphasized how the technology enables consultants to identify the cause of a stroke within seconds of a scan. The findings are instantly shared via an app with the stroke team, speeding up the treatment process significantly.
Kinnock pointed out that AI can reduce the time from symptom onset to treatment by up to an hour. This improvement is crucial, as faster treatment directly improves patient outcomes. He said, "When it comes to strokes, every second counts."
Faster Diagnosis and Improved Outcomes
RapidAI not only speeds up the triage process but also provides preliminary reports that clinicians can quickly verify. It can detect suspected strokes even when classic signs like speech difficulties or facial droop aren’t obvious. This leads to earlier interventions that can save lives.
Since its deployment at Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, diagnosis times have dropped to between 40 and 60 minutes—up to an hour faster than before. This improvement aligns with the NHS’s 10-year digital transformation plan, the Plan for Change, which aims to expand AI use nationwide.
Kinnock added, "Artificial intelligence and digital tech are central to our 10-year health plan, helping patients be seen faster to improve outcomes so they can get home sooner."
