AI-Powered Construction Procurement Startup Secures $20M Series A Funding
Parspec, a San Mateo-based startup leveraging artificial intelligence to streamline construction supply chains, has raised $20 million in a Series A funding round. The capital injection aims to accelerate its mission to help sales agents and wholesale distributors bid and supply construction products more efficiently.
Parspec’s standout feature is its AI-driven capability to instantly identify market-available products that meet complex customer specifications. This technology reduces the time and cost for bidding by half, while improving bid accuracy and compliance, according to Forest Flager, CEO and co-founder.
Expanding Product Focus and Market Reach
Initially concentrating on lighting and electrical products, Parspec has extended its platform to include mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) products. The company currently serves 288 customers, including four of the five largest electrical distributors and three of the five largest lighting agencies in the U.S.
Its revenue model is a usage-based subscription, charging customers based on the number of documents created through its platform, such as quotes, submittals, and operation and maintenance packages.
Funding Details and Market Context
Threshold Ventures (formerly DFJ) led this Series A round, joined by Innovation Endeavors, Building Ventures, Heartland Ventures, and Hometeam Ventures. Parspec’s total funding to date now stands at $31.5 million, with its valuation tripling since its March 2022 seed round.
This funding milestone is noteworthy given the decline in U.S. venture funding to real estate startups—from $13.7 billion in 2021 to $3.6 billion projected for 2024. Despite this trend, Parspec’s growth highlights the demand for efficiency improvements in construction procurement amid rising material costs.
Origins Rooted in Data and Optimization
Flager and co-founder Pratyush Havelia began working on Parspec full-time in 2021, after research at Stanford revealed a lack of scalable product information vital for building optimization. Flager’s experience leading software at Katerra deepened his understanding of procurement workflows and the value of product data.
Parspec’s unique ability to instantly identify specification-compliant products and automatically locate related documentation—such as installation guides and warranties—sets it apart from competitors. This feature, combined with its quoting product launched in January 2024, has driven fourfold revenue growth over the past year.
How AI Powers the Platform
Parspec operates as a comprehensive workflow tool, embedding AI at every step. It uses machine learning and large language models (LLMs) to extract product data from unstructured documents like drawings and specs. The platform crawls roughly 4,000 manufacturer websites, indexing PDF product documentation, extracting attributes, and matching products to technical requirements.
Industry Impact and Investor Confidence
Mo Islam, partner at Threshold Ventures, praised Parspec’s “AI-native product” for automating procurement and enabling customers to win more projects while improving margins in a trillion-dollar industry. The company’s proprietary dataset and fine-tuned AI models create a strong competitive advantage, automating workflows from product selection to quoting and submittals.
The Road Ahead
With construction material prices about 40% higher than in 2020, Parspec’s solution addresses the urgent need for more agile and efficient supply chains. Its AI-driven platform promises to reduce costs and improve processes across the construction procurement value chain.
