AI-Powered Study Tool Boosts Law Students’ Exam Performance

Law school grading often hinges on final exams scored on a strict curve, making every point critical for future job prospects. Professors typically provide detailed syllabi, course outlines, and practice exams featuring hypothetical legal scenarios to help students prepare.

Building on these resources, the startup Cubby has created Cubby Law, an AI-driven study tool that generates an unlimited number of practice questions. Beyond just creating questions, the AI evaluates student answers based on what it predicts a specific professor expects in terms of content and grading.

How Cubby Law Works

According to Truman Sacks, Cubby’s founder and CEO, the tool helps students grasp how professors frame fact patterns and what they look for in exam responses. This insight allows students to focus their efforts more effectively during preparation.

The AI was trained on thousands of law school practice exams, many sourced from public university databases. It then refines its feedback using class-specific materials uploaded by students, improving accuracy and relevance.

Proven Impact on GPA

In a pilot program with 100 law students, Cubby Law raised average GPAs by 0.25 to 0.55 points. Participants reported not only improved legal knowledge but also better exam technique, learning which points to emphasize in answers.

Liam Willis, a second-year student at Southern Methodist University, shared that Cubby’s AI offered detailed critiques rather than just praise, unlike general AI like ChatGPT. This helped him understand how to approach exam questions, boosting his GPA by over half a point.

Mia Bartschi, entering her second year at UC San Francisco, noted that Cubby flagged areas needing more practice by comparing answers against her outline. This targeted feedback contributed to a 0.2 point GPA increase.

New Features Launching August 25

  • Automated Study Calendar: Cubby Law pulls key dates from syllabi and schedules daily readings for each course.
  • In-Semester Quizzes: Similar to platforms like Khan Academy, it delivers quizzes throughout the semester to encourage steady study habits over cramming.
  • Case Brief Library: Provides summaries of thousands of commonly taught legal cases, customized to the specific course to keep students focused on relevant precedents.

Priced at $30 monthly, Cubby Law’s focus on law-specific training sets it apart from general AI tools.

Origins and Future Plans

Cubby Law evolved from an earlier product intended as a general research assistant for documents and videos. When the team saw law students using it predominantly for exam prep, they shifted focus entirely to the legal education market.

Based in New York City, Cubby plans pop-up events at local law schools featuring live demos and refreshments. With $2.75 million raised and a team of seven, the company is exploring expansion into bar exam preparation to support users beyond law school.

This targeted AI tool offers legal professionals and students a practical way to improve exam readiness and performance.
