Doge Deploys AI Tool to Slash Federal Regulations by Half

The Department of Government Efficiency, known as Doge, is leveraging artificial intelligence to create a “delete list” targeting federal regulations. Internal documents obtained by the Washington Post reveal plans to analyze 200,000 regulations and eliminate approximately 100,000 of them by the first anniversary of Donald Trump’s second presidential inauguration.

The initiative, called the Doge AI Deregulation Decision Tool, aims to identify regulations deemed unnecessary under current laws. Doge claims that after staff review, half of the reviewed regulations could be removed.

AI in Action Within Federal Agencies

A PowerPoint presentation shared with the press highlights that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has used the AI tool to evaluate 1,083 regulatory sections. Meanwhile, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reportedly used the tool to draft 100% of its deregulations.

Several HUD employees confirmed to the Washington Post that AI recently reviewed hundreds, possibly over a thousand, lines of regulations, marking a significant application of AI in regulatory review processes.

Trump’s Push for Deregulation

During his 2024 campaign, Donald Trump emphasized that government regulations inflate the cost of goods and promised the most aggressive regulatory cuts in U.S. history. He has consistently criticized environmental regulations aimed at addressing the climate crisis.

As president, Trump ordered all federal agencies to review their regulations in coordination with Doge, reinforcing a broad federal effort to reduce regulatory burdens.

White House Perspective on AI Deregulation

When asked about the AI-driven deregulation approach, White House spokesperson Harrison Fields stated that “all options are being explored” to fulfill the president’s promises. Fields clarified that no formal plan has been approved yet and that efforts are in early stages with ongoing consultations.

He added that Doge’s team consists of “the best and brightest” working on transforming government systems to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Leadership and Staffing at Doge

Elon Musk led Doge until May and appointed several young and relatively inexperienced staff, including 19-year-old Edward Coristine, previously known online as “Big Balls.” Reuters reported earlier this year that Coristine was among two Doge associates advocating for AI adoption across federal agencies.

What This Means for Government Employees

  • Expect increased use of AI tools in regulatory review and decision-making processes.
  • Regulatory staff may see shifts in workload as AI identifies regulations for potential elimination.
  • Understanding AI’s role in government efficiency could become crucial for compliance and policy roles.
