Air Force Opens Alaska Bases for AI Data Center Development
The Department of the Air Force is seeking industry partners to build and operate artificial intelligence data centers across three Alaska installations. The service issued a request for lease proposals on SAM.gov on Friday, making approximately 4,700 acres available at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Eielson Air Force Base, and Clear Space Force Station.
The project operates under the Enhanced Use Lease model, which allows the Air Force to lease underutilized property to commercial operators in exchange for financial returns. Selected developers would handle all phases of the project-from financing and permitting through construction and ongoing operations.
What the Air Force Is Offering
The proposal identifies 12 parcels available for development. A single partner or consortium could build one or more data centers on designated sites.
"By making this land available, we are supporting the growing demands of the AI industry while generating value that directly supports our missions and the readiness of our Airmen and Guardians," said Robert Moriarty, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for Installations.
Timeline for Interested Contractors
The Air Force will host a virtual industry day on April 23 to detail the proposal process and answer questions from potential offerors.
In-person site tours are scheduled as follows:
- Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson: April 28
- Clear Space Force Station: April 29
- Eielson Air Force Base: April 30
Contractors interested in the project can register for both the virtual briefing and site visits through SAM.gov.
For IT and development professionals evaluating infrastructure partnerships or considering roles in large-scale data center operations, understanding federal procurement processes and Enhanced Use Lease requirements is increasingly relevant.
