Air France-KLM Launches Cloud-Based Generative AI Factory to Transform Operations

Air France-KLM, the French-Dutch airline group, has teamed up with Accenture and Google Cloud to create a dedicated generative AI (gen AI) factory. This new platform is set up on Google Cloud and developed with Accenture’s expertise to accelerate innovation and streamline operations across the airline group.

The AI factory offers a scalable system for testing, managing, and deploying generative AI, agentic, and machine learning models. These models are built specifically to address the airline’s operational challenges and business needs.

Driving Efficiency Across Key Operations

The gen AI factory is already showing results in areas such as ground operations, engineering and maintenance, and customer service. It helps Air France-KLM quickly identify high-value AI use cases and scale them with shared tools and cross-functional expertise.

Thanks to this approach, the airline group has increased its development speed by over 35%, moving projects from experimentation to full deployment faster than before.

Building on Cloud Migration Progress

This initiative builds on earlier efforts with Accenture that modernized Air France-KLM’s digital infrastructure. Key applications were migrated to the cloud, enabling faster and more flexible AI deployments.

Among the innovations developed are a private AI assistant and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) tools. These combine large language models with internal search capabilities to support complex tasks like diagnosing and repairing aircraft damage—critical for maintaining operational reliability.

Empowering Teams with AI Skills

Air France-KLM is also focusing on upskilling its employees. Through co-hosted ‘GenAI Days’, staff learn how to use the AI factory’s tools to create solutions that deliver measurable value, including cost savings and new revenue streams.

Sabine Bechelani, managing director at Accenture for travel and client accounts, highlighted that investing in a cloud-powered digital core strengthens agility and resilience. She noted that generative AI simplifies customer journeys and creates substantial business value.

Isabelle Fraine, managing director of Google Cloud France, emphasized their role in accelerating this transformation and enhancing operations to create better experiences for travelers.

Julie Pozzi, head of data and AI at Air France-KLM, described the initiative as a broader shift beyond technology. She explained the goal of reinventing the airline’s operational backbone to better anticipate changes in the travel market and deliver personalized, efficient service.

What This Means for Operations Professionals

  • Faster deployment of AI solutions means operational teams can solve problems and optimize processes more quickly.
  • Cross-functional collaboration encourages sharing best practices and tools, reducing duplication and accelerating impact.
  • Training programs like ‘GenAI Days’ support continuous learning, enabling staff to actively contribute to AI-driven improvements.
  • AI-powered tools for maintenance and customer service reduce downtime and enhance passenger satisfaction.
