Aker BP and Armada Deploy Offshore Data Center for Real-Time Drilling Analytics
Aker BP and Armada will install a modular data center on Norway's Continental Shelf to process drilling and operational data at the rig site rather than relying on distant cloud systems. The move addresses a persistent problem in offshore operations: latency and bandwidth constraints that slow decision-making when connectivity to onshore infrastructure is limited or fails.
Offshore drilling generates enormous volumes of downhole and surface data. Until now, that data has traveled to onshore systems for analysis, creating delays during time-critical operations. Moving compute capacity to the rig allows operators to run predictive models locally and act on results immediately.
What the system does
Armada's Galleon modular data center will support local processing of drilling data and execution of artificial intelligence models. Specific applications include early detection of equipment failures, real-time drilling performance monitoring, and reduction of non-productive time-the periods when rigs are not actively drilling.
Local processing also improves operational resilience. If connectivity to onshore systems drops, the rig can continue running analytics and making decisions without waiting for connection restoration.
The platform consolidates fragmented IT and operational technology systems into a single architecture. This standardization simplifies cybersecurity management, streamlines compliance work, and enables more efficient remote monitoring and support from onshore teams.
Deployment and expansion
The initial installation will serve as a reference system on a single offshore asset. Aker BP and its partners have already identified specific drilling data use cases to guide the rollout. Success on the first platform could lead to deployment across additional assets.
For Armada, the project extends modular computing solutions into offshore oil and gas, building on previous work in other remote, connectivity-constrained environments.
