Alibaba deploys AI tools to help factories sell online
Alibaba's e-commerce platforms are using the China International Consumer Products Expo in Hainan to demonstrate how AI can help small manufacturers move from production floors to online markets. Taobao and Tmall Group presented tools that guide product development, automate customer service, and generate marketing copy - all aimed at factories with limited e-commerce experience.
The move reflects a shift in Chinese policy toward deeper integration between digital commerce and manufacturing. Six government departments recently issued guidelines calling for e-commerce platforms to support small and medium-sized enterprises and accelerate industrial digitalization.
From factory floor to online storefront
Taobao Factory's "Spark" system gives manufacturers access to platform data before production starts. Factories can identify trending categories, optimal price ranges, and common customer complaints to guide product decisions.
The system generates product descriptions, marketing copy, and short video scripts. It also handles customer service, order processing, logistics coordination, and after-sales services - tasks that typically require dedicated staff.
"In the past, factories were good at making products but not necessarily good at selling them," said Song Tao, vice-president of Taobao and Tmall Group. "AI can bridge that gap."
Structural advantages in scale
Song identified three factors that position China for rapid development of AI-driven consumer applications. The country's large market generates vast volumes of real-time data that help AI systems understand demand accurately.
China also has an integrated manufacturing and digital supply chain that moves products from development to mass production quickly. Chinese consumers tend to adopt new technologies readily, creating feedback loops that help companies refine products.
"These factors mean AI consumer applications in China are not only technically feasible," Song said. "They are also commercially scalable."
Balancing consumer and merchant needs
Alibaba's strategy centers on solving problems for both sides of its marketplace. Song said the company prioritizes AI systems that improve consumer experience while creating growth opportunities for merchants.
The expo showcases AI glasses, robotics, and smart devices from Chinese technology brands, positioning it as both a testing ground and a sales channel for new products. For product teams, the approach demonstrates how AI tools can reduce barriers to entry for small manufacturers entering digital commerce.
