ALIMCO Integrates AI in Next-Gen Prosthetics for Inclusive Innovation
The Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) is advancing its lineup of assistive technologies by integrating artificial intelligence into prosthetics and mobility aids. These developments were shared during ALIMCO's Annual General Meeting for FY 2024-25, where several products nearing rollout were highlighted.
As a public sector undertaking under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, ALIMCO focuses on creating assistive devices that combine in-house research, user-centric design, and cost-efficiency. The goal is to provide persons with disabilities (PwDs) with accessible, affordable technology that supports independence.
AI-Powered Assistive Devices in Development
ALIMCO's upcoming product range includes AI-enabled prosthetics and smart mobility aids. Senior officials emphasized the importance of indigenous innovation, reflecting national initiatives like ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
- Universal socket adaptable to various prosthetic needs
- Upgraded motorized tricycles and wheelchairs
- Commode wheelchair tailored for enhanced usability
- Assistive cane designed for visually impaired users
These products are currently at different stages such as design, prototyping, and user trials, with plans for launch in FY 2025-26.
Collaborations and Outreach Efforts
To extend the reach of its assistive devices, ALIMCO is partnering with state governments, NGOs, district administrations, and the Red Cross Society. These collaborations aim to improve last-mile delivery, particularly in remote and aspirational districts, through the Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Kendra (PMDK) initiative.
ALIMCO also works closely with special schools nationwide to ensure children with disabilities receive suitable devices. In addition, coordination with state project directors of the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is boosted through dedicated conferences. These efforts target better identification and support for Children with Special Needs (CWSN) under the Centre’s ADIP scheme.
Focus on Impact and Accessibility
ALIMCO’s latest product developments aim to increase availability of quality rehabilitation support, especially in rural areas where access remains limited. According to Praveen Kumar, CMD of ALIMCO, “True empowerment begins with access to technology that enhances independence and dignity.”
For product developers, ALIMCO’s approach highlights the importance of combining smart technology with affordability and local manufacturing. The integration of AI into assistive devices reflects an opportunity to push innovation that is both practical and inclusive.
