Amazon pursues Globalstar acquisition to accelerate satellite internet push
Amazon is in talks to acquire satellite telecom group Globalstar, according to Reuters reporting on April 2. The deal would bolster Project Kuiper, Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite program, as the company works to compete with SpaceX's Starlink.
Amazon has launched 180 satellites through Project Kuiper so far and plans to deploy a 3,200-satellite constellation. The network would serve consumers, businesses, and government agencies. Starlink currently operates more than 9,500 satellites and serves nine million users worldwide.
The acquisition faces complexity due to Apple's 20% stake in Globalstar. Negotiations are ongoing.
