Ambience Launches AI Model That Outperforms Physicians in Medical Coding

Ambience Healthcare has introduced an AI model that codes medical data with higher accuracy than physicians. This model uses OpenAI’s reinforcement fine-tuning techniques and focuses specifically on ICD-10 coding, the standard for classifying diseases and health conditions.
In internal tests, the AI demonstrated a 27% relative improvement over physician benchmarks. To verify these results, Ambience compared the AI's performance against a panel of 18 board-certified doctors using clinical scenarios agreed upon by experts.
Reducing Errors and Improving Efficiency
This technology promises to lower billing mistakes and streamline administrative tasks in healthcare. Brendan Fortuner, Ambience’s Head of Engineering, emphasized that the goal isn’t to replace medical professionals but to free them from administrative burdens and reduce errors, which can improve patient care and reduce costs.
Ambience’s tools record patient visits with consent and produce clinical documentation in real time. Currently, over 40 healthcare organizations—including the Cleveland Clinic and UCSF Health—use their technology.
Expanding Applications
Beyond ICD-10 coding, Ambience is exploring AI solutions for CPT coding, prior authorization, and clinical trial matching. These efforts aim to further reduce administrative workload and improve healthcare delivery.
Backing and Investment
The company has secured more than $100 million in funding from investors such as Kleiner Perkins, Andreessen Horowitz, and the OpenAI Startup Fund.
