Anthropic Launches Higher Education Advisory Board and AI Fluency Courses

The next few years will define how AI integrates into classrooms, influencing how students engage with technology and learning. Anthropic has introduced two key initiatives to support higher education in this transition: a Higher Education Advisory Board focused on guiding Claude’s development for academic use, and three AI Fluency courses designed to equip educators and students with practical, responsible AI skills.

Higher Education Advisory Board

Anthropic’s newly formed Higher Education Advisory Board brings together experienced leaders in university management, educational technology, and learning sciences. Their mission is to ensure that AI tools enhance critical thinking and learning without undermining academic standards.

Rick Levin chairs the board. He led Yale University for two decades and played a major role in expanding Coursera’s global reach. Levin emphasizes the importance of ethical AI policies that protect academic integrity and student privacy while unlocking AI’s educational potential.

Other distinguished members include:

  • David Leebron, former President of Rice University, known for advancing research and student success.
  • James DeVaney, Associate Vice Provost at the University of Michigan, specializing in academic innovation and workforce development.
  • Julie Schell, Assistant Vice Provost at the University of Texas, Austin, expert in educational technology and evidence-based teaching.
  • Matthew Rascoff, Vice Provost for Digital Education at Stanford University, focusing on expanding access to advanced education.
  • Yolanda Watson Spiva, President of Complete College America, leading efforts on AI adoption for student success across 53 states.

AI Fluency Courses for Educators and Students

In collaboration with the advisory board and educators worldwide, Anthropic has released three courses that provide actionable frameworks for integrating AI into university settings. Co-created with professors Rick Dakan and Joseph Feller, these courses are openly licensed to allow adaptation by any institution.

  • AI Fluency for Educators: Helps faculty incorporate AI into teaching practices, from course materials to assessment and discussion enhancement. It draws from real classroom experiences.
  • AI Fluency for Students: Focuses on responsible collaboration with AI for coursework and career planning, emphasizing critical thinking and personal commitments to ethical AI use.
  • Teaching AI Fluency: Supports educators looking to implement AI literacy on their campuses, offering instructional frameworks and curriculum guidance for preparing students for an AI-enhanced environment.

The Path Forward

These initiatives provide clear support and guidance as higher education adapts to AI’s growing role. The advisory board informs Anthropic’s strategic development, while the AI Fluency courses offer practical tools educators can apply immediately. Together, they aim to foster responsible AI use that benefits students, faculty, and institutions.
