On July 14, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude for Teachers, giving verified K-12 educators in the United States free access to premium AI capabilities, a library of teaching skills, and direct connections to evidence-based curricula mapped to academic standards in all 50 states. The program aims to close the gap between research-backed instructional practices and the time constraints that keep teachers from implementing them, particularly in under-resourced schools.
Claude for Teachers connects to Learning Commons, which maps state standards and the underlying learning progressions. It also integrates with widely used curricular resources like OpenSciEd and Illustrative Mathematics' IM v.360. Teachers can link Claude to a suite of classroom tools, including ASSISTments for auto-scored math problems, Brisk Teaching for interactive activities, Canva Education for design, Diffit for differentiation, and others like MagicSchool and TeachFX.
How it works
After verifying their status, educators get access to Claude with tailored teaching skills co-developed with Learning Commons. These skills handle tasks teachers identified as most important: planning lessons from high-quality materials and differentiating instruction for students at different readiness levels. Claude drafts lesson plans and student-facing materials, with scaffolds for accessibility and extensions for advanced learners.
Claude for Teachers includes Claude Code and Cowork, which can carry out work autonomously. A teacher can hand over a folder of class data-rosters, diagnostics, attendance, notes-and Claude builds a picture of each student's progress to inform instruction. Teachers can also schedule repeated tasks, like reviewing exit tickets each day at 4pm and adjusting the next day's plan.
Privacy and safety
The tool is for educators only, consistent with Claude's 18-and-over policy. It operates under teacher-specific terms and a K-12 Data Processing Addendum written to comply with FERPA. No student data is used for model training. Anthropic is working with the American Federation of Teachers to align practices with industry gold standards.
Randi Weingarten, AFT President, said: "We've been working with Anthropic on a Gold Standard that sets out industry best practices for safety and privacy in K-12 education. It's important that Anthropic is committing to these principles in their new Claude for Teachers - a tool designed by and for educators to assist them instructionally and hopefully give them more time for the human relationships at the heart of learning."
Broader efforts and AI fluency
Anthropic also released an AI Fluency for K-12 Teachers course, co-created with Teach for America, and a train-the-trainer module with AFT. The guidance is model-agnostic, Creative Commons-licensed, and focuses on practical classroom uses. The launch reflects a growing focus on AI for Education, with tools designed to support teachers rather than replace them.
As part of its Beneficial Deployments mission, the company is releasing an open-source repository of the teaching skills and a technical write-up. A pilot evaluation will run in Detroit Public Schools Community District, studying impact on teacher wellbeing and practice. These efforts are supported by a partnership with the Gates Foundation to co-develop tools for K-12 outcomes. Playlab will support a national network of lab schools to help educators build their own AI tools.
Why this matters for educators
Claude for Teachers directly addresses the time crunch that forces many teachers to choose between planning and personal time. By automating lesson scaffolding, differentiation, and data analysis, it frees educators to focus on direct student interaction. Free access for verified teachers until June 2027 removes a cost barrier, and the integration with state standards and trusted curricula means materials are ready for classroom use. For educators looking to strengthen their AI skills, an AI Learning Path for Teachers offers further support.
