Armenia Rolls Out ChatGPT Access to 50,000 Students and Teachers

Armenia's Ministry of Education signed an agreement with OpenAI and Firebird to provide ChatGPT Edu subscriptions across the country's schools and universities starting in September. The initial phase covers 50,000 educational accounts, with plans to expand further.

Minister Zhanna Andreasyan, who signed the agreement, framed the move as a response to global shifts in how education systems must adapt. "Artificial intelligence is already part of our reality, and educational systems around the world are facing the challenge of effectively adapting to this new reality," she said.

What Teachers and Students Get

ChatGPT Edu is a version of ChatGPT designed specifically for schools and universities. It includes Codex, a tool focused on coding and software development. The platform maintains data protection and information security standards required for educational use.

Teachers will use it for lesson planning and curriculum development. Students will access tools for research, information analysis, and coding practice. The system is available to high school students and teachers in general education schools, and to university students and lecturers in higher education institutions.

Funding and Next Steps

Firebird is funding the first phase, allowing the government to test the program's effectiveness before committing state money to a larger rollout. The rollout begins in the 2026-2027 academic year, with preparatory work underway now.

Armenian officials said they will focus on digital literacy, safe use of AI tools, and data protection in schools. After evaluating results, the government may provide state funding to expand and permanently integrate the system into Armenia's education structure.

Context

Armenia has already launched AI-focused programs in recent years, including the "Artificial Intelligence Generation" program for high schools and the Step AI initiative. The new ChatGPT Edu agreement builds on this foundation.

Jaina Devaney, who leads OpenAI's "Education for Countries" initiative, said the partnership addresses a core need: "Education is one of the most important areas through which artificial intelligence can expand opportunities."
