ASHG Launches AI Initiative to Set Standards for Genetics Research
The American Society of Human Genetics announced today the launch of an AI Initiative designed to establish governance frameworks and best practices for using artificial intelligence in genomics research and clinical work.
The effort brings together researchers, clinicians, and industry leaders to address how AI should be deployed in interpreting genomic data, improving diagnoses, and developing personalized treatments. ASHG President Susan A. Slaugenhaupt said the goal is to help the genetics community "use this rapidly evolving technology responsibly so that we can analyze large data sets and foster scientific breakthroughs."
What the Initiative Includes
The program has three main components:
- An invitation-only summit bringing together academic, government, and industry leaders to address governance and standardization challenges
- A two-day virtual symposium showcasing AI applications in human genetics and genomics
- A published report with recommendations and a roadmap for how the field should advance AI governance and use
Who's Involved
Marylyn Ritchie, Chief AI Officer at the Medical University of South Carolina, chairs the task force guiding the initiative. The 11-member group includes researchers from Stanford, Princeton, and UC San Francisco, alongside representatives from Ambry Genetics, Illumina, and AWS.
Ambry Genetics and Amazon Web Services are sponsoring the initiative.
