Ask 3M and the Digital Materials Hub Help Engineers Go From Idea to Product Faster

3M AI Tools Speed Up How Ideas Become Products

Every build starts with a simple question: How can we make this? The hard part is turning that question into a reliable, manufacturable answer without burning weeks on trial-and-error. 3M's new digital tools-Ask 3M and the 3M Digital Materials Hub-compress that loop so teams can move from concept to confident decisions faster.

Ask 3M: An AI assistant for adhesive and tape selection

Ask 3M is a pilot AI assistant that helps engineers solve bonding challenges across 3M's portfolio of tapes and adhesives. It guides you through substrates, environmental conditions, assembly methods, and performance targets, then recommends suitable options-so you spend less time hunting specs and more time building.

  • Contextual recommendations for bonding under real constraints (temperature, load, process, durability).
  • Clear rationale to move from problem framing to a shortlist you can evaluate and test.
  • Built on AWS AI services (including Amazon Bedrock) and AgentCore for secure, scalable operation.

"Our goal is to enable faster, more confident decision making so customers can integrate the right 3M materials in their designs and get to market sooner," said Chris Goralski, group president of the 3M Safety and Industrial Business Group.

3M Digital Materials Hub: Data cards, optical models, and direct collaboration

The 3M Digital Materials Hub started as a simple way to find simulation-ready data cards. It now goes further with a Workbench feature for direct collaboration with 3M scientists, virtual materials sampling, and the option to explore generative solutions that don't yet exist physically.

  • Search, filter, and download material data cards compatible with leading FEA software.
  • Optical Models that represent 3M optical film performance in common simulation environments.
  • Frictionless import into virtual simulations to assess tradeoffs earlier in the process.
  • Request bespoke virtual materials to tackle specific design constraints.
  • Use Workbench to align with 3M experts on targets, boundary conditions, and validation plans.

In pilot projects, engineers reported smoother integration of 3M materials into simulation workflows, which shortened prototyping and design cycles. "We can deliver secure, scalable access to mechanical models, optical models and virtual materials, while helping our customers reduce iterations and accelerate decisions," said Jason Langfield, 3M Digital Materials Hub project lead.

Why this matters for product development

Electronics, automotive, and data center programs live on tight schedules. Material choice and bonding design are common bottlenecks. Ask 3M and the Digital Materials Hub help teams validate options earlier and commit with confidence-without waiting on full physical builds.

  • Cut time spent searching specs and tribal knowledge for adhesives and tapes.
  • Reduce physical prototypes by validating digitally with simulation-ready data.
  • De-risk assembly choices by modeling environmental and process conditions up front.
  • Order small quantities for final checks once the digital path looks solid.

"Together, Ask 3M and the 3M Digital Materials Hub allow customers to move from design challenge to solution concept, then digital selection and simulation in minutes," said Holly Semerad, chief marketing officer for 3M's Safety & Industrial Business Group. "We can further accelerate the testing timeframe with small quantity purchase options for final and confident prototyping."

A fast, practical workflow

  • Frame the bonding problem: substrates, load cases, environment, process limits, targets.
  • Use Ask 3M to get a focused shortlist with reasoning tied to your constraints.
  • Pull data cards from the Digital Materials Hub for your FEA and optical tools.
  • Simulate mechanical and optical performance; flag risks and refine targets.
  • If gaps remain, explore bespoke virtual materials with 3M through Workbench.
  • Lock the design, then order small quantities for final, high-signal tests.

Who benefits most

Small and mid-sized teams that can't afford long testing loops. High-mix programs where each assembly has unique constraints. Any group that needs to make material decisions early and back them up with data instead of guesswork.

Availability and what's next

Ask 3M is in pilot for engineers working on bonding design challenges within the Safety & Industrial Business Group. The 3M Digital Materials Hub is live and expanding with Optical Models and collaboration features. Early customers report fewer iterations and faster decisions-exactly what most programs need.
