Avnet and Hong Kong launch 12-month AI hardware startup program

Avnet, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), and the University of Hong Kong's Emerging Microelectronics and Ubiquitous Systems Laboratory (EMUS Lab) are opening applications for a co-incubation program targeting startups with AI hardware prototypes. The DfMA Launchpad for AI MMP Programme runs for 12 months and accepts applications through May 29, 2026.

The program focuses on three technology areas: Edge AI for real-time device-level intelligence, Physical AI for robotics and autonomous systems, and high-performance computing for AI model training. Startups must have a functional prototype or early-stage product in one of these areas.

What startups receive

Selected companies get access to EMUS Lab facilities, one-on-one mentorship from Avnet engineers and University of Hong Kong experts, and support for AI model optimization and hardware-software integration. Potential funding of up to HKD 100,000 is available through HKSTP's Ideation Programme.

Participants also gain direct access to Avnet's network of original equipment manufacturers, enterprise customers, and investors. The program connects startups with HKSTP's co-development partner network for co-creation opportunities.

Eligibility and timeline

Startups worldwide can apply, but international companies selected for the program must establish a Hong Kong entity. Interviews are scheduled for July 2-3, with final results announced July 13, 2026.

EMUS Lab, co-established by Avnet and the University of Hong Kong, has published research in Nature journals and presented at top-tier AI conferences including ICLR and ICML. The lab has engaged more than 260 students through STEM initiatives.

Arthur Chung, Vice President of Sales and Supplier Management for Avnet in Asia, said the collaboration "brings together global technology expertise, advanced research capabilities, and a strong innovation ecosystem" to move products from development to production.

Derek Chim, Head of Startup Ecosystem and Development at HKSTP, said the partnership strengthens Hong Kong's position as an innovation hub while accelerating commercialization of AI hardware through "collaborative ecosystem building and market linkage."

Full program details and application guidelines are available at Avnet's program page.
