BCPS Celebrates Computer Science Education Month with "The Hour of AI"
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is marking Computer Science Education Month with a districtwide push: The Hour of AI. From December 1-19, 2025, students are invited to spend at least one focused hour exploring how AI works and how to use it responsibly.
This builds on years of success with The Hour of Code and meets a clear need: give students early, structured exposure to AI concepts and tools. The goal is simple-grow curiosity, spark problem-solving, and set a foundation for responsible use.
What The Hour of AI looks like in classrooms
With support from the BCPS Applied Learning Department, schools will run interactive, easy-to-follow activities that introduce core AI ideas and ethical use. Options include Code.org, Minecraft, MakeCode, Micro:bit, Family STEM Nights, and other AI-focused resources-accessible for beginners and engaging for experienced learners.
- One hour, any time between December 1-19.
- Teacher-friendly guides and activities; minimal prep.
- Flexible for different grade levels and subject areas.
- Emphasis on practical skills and responsible decision-making.
Classroom ideas you can run this month
- Use an introductory AI module on Code.org to explain training data, patterns, and limitations.
- Run a build-and-test activity in Minecraft Education to show how prompts and constraints affect outcomes.
- Pair MakeCode and Micro:bit to create simple, sensor-driven projects that simulate decision rules.
- Host a Family STEM Night station where students explain what AI can and cannot do, using examples from class.
Superintendent visit: December 11 at Liberty Elementary
On December 11, 2025, BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn will join fifth-grade students at Liberty Elementary School in Margate (2450 Banks Road) for The Hour of AI. The event begins at 10:15 a.m. Media are invited to cover the event.
How to get started
- Pick your activity set and schedule a 60-minute block between December 1-19.
- Brief students on responsible use: data sources, bias, accuracy checks, and giving credit.
- Have students reflect in writing or a quick share-out: What worked, what didn't, and why.
- Share outcomes with your school community and celebrate student work.
