BharatGen AI to Support All 22 Scheduled Indian Languages by June 2026

The government has announced that the BharatGen AI initiative will cover all 22 scheduled Indian languages by June 2026. This expansion is part of a plan to develop foundational AI models that address Indian languages and social contexts effectively.

Current Language Coverage and Expansion Plans

At present, BharatGen supports nine Indian languages: Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Telugu, and Kannada. The initiative will increase its language coverage to 15 by December 2025, adding Assamese, Maithili, Nepali, Odia, Sanskrit, Sindhi, among others.

Scope and Applications of BharatGen AI

BharatGen is India's first government-supported AI program focusing on text, speech, and vision-language systems. It has already developed applications for sectors such as agriculture, governance, and defense, with pilot projects underway. Once fully deployed, these AI solutions will be accessible across all states and districts, including rural and semi-urban areas.

Implementation and Leadership

The project is implemented under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) by the Department of Science and Technology. IIT Bombay’s Technology Innovation Hub for IoT and IoE is leading the development, managing academic partnerships, data infrastructure, and strategic planning.

Current Status and Future Deployment

BharatGen is currently in the pilot phase and not yet publicly or institutionally released. Once operational, the initiative will be rolled out nationwide. The government is also considering collaborations with research institutions in Karnataka to broaden BharatGen’s applications.

Official Launch and Vision

The Union government launched the BharatGen large language model (LLM) in June at the BharatGen Summit. The mission focuses on creating AI that is ethical, inclusive, multilingual, and grounded in Indian values and ethos.

  • Key Dates: Expand to 15 languages by December 2025; cover all 22 scheduled languages by June 2026.
  • Focus Areas: Agriculture, governance, defense, rural and semi-urban outreach.
  • Project Lead: IIT Bombay’s Technology Innovation Hub.

Government officials and employees involved in policy, implementation, or technology deployment can expect BharatGen AI to become a critical tool in enhancing public service delivery across linguistic and regional lines.
