Borouge and Yokogawa Launch AI-Controlled Operations at Abu Dhabi’s Largest Petrochemical Site
Borouge and Yokogawa are testing an AI-driven autonomous control room at Ruwais to predict issues and reduce unplanned shutdowns. This aims to boost efficiency, safety, and operational performance.

Borouge and Yokogawa Test AI-Driven Autonomous Control Room at Ruwais Facility
Borouge has partnered with Yokogawa UAE Industry to trial an AI-powered autonomous control room at its Ruwais petrochemical site in Abu Dhabi. This proof-of-concept will deploy advanced AI systems that process extensive operational data in real time, recognize patterns, and predict potential anomalies.
The goal is clear: enable quicker corrective actions, reduce unplanned shutdowns, and improve overall plant efficiency and performance.
Transforming Control Room Operations
Traditional control rooms mainly react to incidents as they occur. The autonomous control room takes a different approach by anticipating issues and initiating corrective measures proactively through AI and automation technologies.
Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, CEO of Borouge, emphasized that this initiative is part of their AI, Digitalisation and Technology (AIDT) transformation program. He highlighted the ambition to deliver an autonomous control room at what is expected to be the largest petrochemical site globally, driving growth and shareholder value.
Norinao Sato, President and CEO of Yokogawa Middle East & Africa, described the AI-powered control room as a next-generation operational hub. It uses artificial intelligence, machine learning, and automation to improve decision-making, automate processes, enhance safety, and boost efficiency consistently.
Strategic Impact and Operational Benefits
- Reduced risk of unplanned shutdowns through early anomaly detection
- Faster response times via automated corrective actions
- Improved plant performance and operational efficiency
- Enhanced safety by minimizing human error and monitoring system health continuously
This collaboration fits within Borouge’s broader strategy to embed AI and advanced technologies across their operations. The company aims to generate $575 million in value by 2025 through digital transformation and tech partnerships. By mid-2025, Borouge had already achieved $307 million toward this target.
The move also strengthens Abu Dhabi's position as a center for industrial technology innovation and reflects Borouge’s commitment to operational resilience and leadership in petrochemical innovation.
