Box rolls out AI agents for content management: Automate, Extract, and Apps

Box is introducing a set of AI agents to turn content into action. The lineup-Box Automate, Box Extract, and upgraded Box Apps-targets a simple outcome: shorter cycle times, fewer manual touches, and clearer visibility across teams.

For managers, this is about operational efficiency you can measure. Think straight-through processing for routine work, better data quality from documents, and dashboards that surface what needs attention now.

Box Automate: orchestrate work across agents, teams, and systems

Box Automate coordinates workflows between people and AI agents without code. Use the visual builder to design everything from simple task automation to fully autonomous, cross-system flows.

Create custom agents-Q&A, Compose, Extract, and Research-and route tasks based on business logic. Native integrations with Box Forms, Box Doc Gen, and Box Sign support end-to-end processes like intake, generation, approval, and signature. APIs extend workflows into your custom apps and external systems.

Box Extract: reliable data from messy documents

Box Extract uses AI to pull structured data from contracts, scanned forms, PDFs, spreadsheets, images, and even handwriting. Standard and Enhanced Extract Agents read document context and relationships, not just fields, to capture complex, connected data points.

Built-in validation means outputs are ready for downstream use-whether you're populating ERP records, updating a CRM, or triggering compliance checks.

Box Apps: intelligent dashboards for content operations

Updated Box Apps bring no-code dashboards that combine content, metadata, users, workflows, and agents in one place. Use natural language to find the right files, filter activity, and explore status without digging through folders.

The system can generate dynamic visualizations, flag trends or anomalies, and suggest actions. You can tailor multiple dashboards for different teams and embed them in platforms like Salesforce for easier access.

Model flexibility and ecosystem choice

Through Box AI Studio and Box AI APIs, customers can choose models from Anthropic, Amazon, Google, IBM, Meta, OpenAI, and xAI. You can also connect Box content to third-party agents via the remote Box MCP Server.

Existing integrations include Anthropic Claude, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Mistral Le Chat, OpenAI ChatGPT, and Salesforce Agentforce. GitHub Copilot, IBM WatsonX Orchestrate, and ServiceNow AI Agent Fabric are in development.

Manager's checklist: where to start

  • Prioritize 2-3 high-volume workflows (e.g., contract intake, invoice processing, employee onboarding). Define SLAs and the human-in-the-loop points.
  • Standardize data schemas for Extract outputs. Set accuracy thresholds and an exception path for low-confidence fields.
  • Map integrations: connect Automate flows to CRM/ERP, signature tools, and existing apps via APIs. Plan for sandbox testing before production.
  • Dashboards: define the metrics that matter-cycle time, first-pass yield, exception rate, and touch time. Build team-specific views in Box Apps.
  • Model strategy: select providers that match your security, compliance, and data residency needs. Document usage policies and access controls.
  • Change management: document playbooks for your agents (Q&A, Compose, Extract, Research). Train owners and set feedback loops for continuous improvement.

Availability

Box Automate, Box Extract, and the new Box Apps will be available to customers with Enterprise Advanced subscriptions in the coming months.

Box's direction is clear: make hybrid work smoother by connecting content, people, and AI with less friction.
