Brookfield Commits $10 Billion to AI Infrastructure in Sweden
Brookfield Asset Management, a major New York-based investor, has announced plans to invest $10 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure in Sweden. The highlight of this investment is a new AI data centre to be built in Strängnäs, located approximately 20km west of Stockholm.
The project is intended to support Sweden’s national AI strategy and is expected to take 10 to 15 years to complete. Once operational, the facility will require around 750MW of power and is projected to create over 1,000 permanent jobs. Brookfield states this will be the first AI data centre of its kind in Sweden and among the earliest in Europe.
Investment Focus and Industry Impact
Sikander Rashid, Brookfield’s head for Europe, emphasized the importance of large-scale investments in AI infrastructure. This includes not only data centres but also related elements such as data transfer, chip storage, and energy generation. Rashid noted that this step will enhance sovereign computing capabilities for both public services and private businesses across Europe.
Brookfield is already a significant player in the AI value chain, managing over €100 billion invested in digital infrastructure, renewable energy, and semiconductor manufacturing. Earlier this year, the company announced a €20 billion investment in France to build Europe’s largest AI infrastructure cluster, including 1GW of capacity.
Brookfield’s Presence in Sweden and Beyond
Since 2018, Brookfield has expanded its footprint in Sweden, investing in sectors such as telecom towers, renewable energy, social infrastructure, and logistics. Globally, the company manages assets nearing $1 trillion across several sectors, including renewable energy, infrastructure, private equity, real estate, and credit.
For those in real estate and construction, this development signals growing demand for specialized infrastructure projects that support AI technologies. The scale of Brookfield’s investment highlights opportunities for contractors, engineers, and developers involved in large-scale data centre construction and energy solutions.
With AI infrastructure requiring significant power and sophisticated design, projects like the Strängnäs data centre will likely set new standards for construction and operational efficiency in this sector.
