Bumi Armada deploys Empirisys' BOOST to tighten safety operations on Armada Kraken FPSO

October 24, 2025

Bumi Armada UK has partnered with Empirisys to roll out BOOST, an AI-driven analytics tool, across its North Sea operations. The system plugs into Step Change in Safety's digital observation card tool (E-Obs) and is now live on the Armada Kraken FPSO in EnQuest's Kraken field in the UK North Sea.

The goal is clear: faster hazard insight, cleaner data, and a tighter loop between frontline observations and leadership decisions. For operations teams, that means less manual triage and more time acting on what matters.

Why it matters for operations

BOOST works alongside E-Obs to analyse real-time safety observations and pull in context to spot patterns early. The net effect is quicker identification of emerging risks, sharper categorisation, and stronger communication between offshore crews and onshore leadership.

A 2024 study by Empirisys and Step Change in Safety reviewed 24,000+ safety observations and found nearly half were miscategorised by hazard or Life-Saving Rules. That's a lot of noise in a process that needs signal. Automating the analysis helps close that gap.

Early results and leadership visibility

Bumi Armada UK HSE manager Helen Drewery said: "By adding BOOST to the E-Obs platform, we are making it easier for our workforce to engage with safety reporting while giving our leadership teams clearer, faster insight into risk.

"Since adopting BOOST, we have already seen an improvement in the quality and completeness of reporting across our operations. The combination of frontline participation and advanced analytics is helping us identify emerging themes more effectively and take timely action."

Industry perspective

Step Change in Safety CEO Craig Wiggins said: "By working with innovative member companies like Empirisys, we are enhancing the capabilities of our E-Obs tool and ensuring workforce insights are seamlessly translated into meaningful learnings across the industry."

How BOOST fits into existing workflows

  • Ingests E-Obs submissions and applies AI to classify hazards and themes with context.
  • Flags anomalies and trends for faster triage and escalation to the right owners.
  • Reduces manual rework by standardising categories and highlighting missing fields.
  • Feeds leadership dashboards with timely, prioritised insights to speed decisions.

Practical next steps for ops leaders

  • Integration: Map E-Obs fields to your safety taxonomy upfront; define owners for triage, verification, and closure.
  • Data quality: Set required fields, enforce consistent hazard and Life-Saving Rules categorisation, and run weekly data health checks.
  • Change management: Keep the front line in the loop-show how their inputs change actions and close the feedback loop.
  • Workflow: Build auto-routing rules to SMEs and supervisors; predefine thresholds for escalation and stop-work triggers.
  • Governance: Document model use, bias checks, and override paths; timestamp key decisions for auditability.
  • Training: Short, scenario-based refreshers for observers and approvers to keep submissions clear and actionable.

KPIs to track in the first 90 days

  • Time from observation submission to risk triage (median and 90th percentile).
  • Report completeness rate and rework rate (number of recodes per 100 observations).
  • Hazard and Life-Saving Rules classification accuracy (spot-check audit score).
  • Action closure time and overdue actions aged 7/14/30 days.
  • Leading indicators per 1,000 work hours (unsafe conditions, interventions, positive observations).
  • Supervisor feedback loop time (acknowledgment back to the observer).

Where this is happening

The BOOST rollout is underway on the Armada Kraken FPSO in the UK North Sea, operated by Bumi Armada in EnQuest's Kraken field. Separately, in May 2025, Bumi Armada's subsidiary, Armada Kojo, signed a production sharing contract with Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources for the Kojo block in the Makassar Strait.
