Business Insider hires two reporters to cover AI and robotics

Business Insider is adding two senior tech reporters to its San Francisco bureau, both starting May 4. The newsroom is investing in coverage of artificial intelligence and emerging technology.

Stephen Council joins as a senior tech reporter covering AI, with a focus on large language model companies including OpenAI and Anthropic. Council comes from SFGATE, where he covered AI, labor, and Bay Area companies. His byline has appeared in The Information, The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, and CalMatters.

Council won a 2025 tech reporting award from the Society of Professional Journalists, Northern California chapter, and a 2021 investigative reporting award from the San Francisco Press Club. He studied journalism and economics at Northwestern University.

Rya Jetha joins as a senior tech reporter covering physical AI and robotics. She previously covered tech culture and autonomous vehicles at The San Francisco Standard, where she reported on a billionaire-run secret society atop Salesforce Tower and analyzed the characteristics of what she called Tech Bro 2.0.

Jetha holds a bachelor's degree in history and politics from Pomona College and a master's in history from the University of Cambridge.

Writers covering the AI beat may find value in understanding the technical foundations of the field. Generative AI and LLM Courses provide structured knowledge of the companies and technologies Council will be reporting on. For those using AI as a reporting tool, AI for Writers covers practical applications for research and content production.
