Butterfly Network Receives FDA Clearance for Automated Gestational Age Tool

Butterfly Network has secured FDA clearance for an AI-powered tool that estimates how far along a pregnancy is in under two minutes. The tool, integrated into the company's handheld ultrasound device, is the first FDA-cleared blind-sweep ultrasound AI for gestational age assessment.

The clearance addresses a persistent gap in maternal care. Nearly half of rural U.S. counties lack hospital obstetric services. Globally, 92% of maternal and neonatal deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, many preventable with basic imaging and earlier intervention.

How the Tool Works

The gestational age tool uses a three-step process: enter fundal height, apply gel, and perform guided sweeps. The system delivers results automatically without requiring image capture, interpretation, or fetal biometric measurements.

The AI was trained on more than 21 million images across diverse patient populations and care settings. It produces results equivalent to sonographer-performed biometry-based assessments for pregnancies between 16 and 37 weeks.

The tool was developed using deep-learning models created at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is integrated directly into Butterfly's mobile app.

Clinical Impact

The tool addresses three specific use cases: enabling faster decisions in emergency situations when gestational age is unknown, expanding access in countries with high maternal and neonatal mortality, and improving prenatal ultrasound access in rural U.S. communities.

Earlier gestational age identification allows clinicians to time prenatal screenings, detect complications sooner, and guide intervention decisions.

Butterfly has already deployed the tool in Malawi and Uganda with support from the Gates Foundation. FDA clearance enables expansion to additional regions in Sub-Saharan Africa and comes as federal rural health initiatives increase investment in care access.
