California Launches AI Chatbot Offering Wildfire Resources in 70 Languages

As wildfire season approaches, California introduces “Ask CAL FIRE”, an AI-powered chatbot accessible via CAL FIRE’s website, fire.ca.gov. This tool provides wildfire prevention resources and emergency updates in 70 languages, making critical information more accessible to all Californians.

What “Ask CAL FIRE” Does

The chatbot answers frequently asked questions using existing data from CAL FIRE’s site. It directs users to detailed resources on topics such as home hardening, defensible space, and active wildfire incidents statewide. The tool also collects real-time user inquiries, helping CAL FIRE understand community information needs.

Government Focus: Accessibility and Real-Time Information

Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the role of technology in public safety, stating the chatbot connects Californians with immediate information in their preferred language. CAL FIRE Director Joe Tyler highlighted the importance of fast, reliable communication during wildfire emergencies, ensuring guidance reaches diverse communities effectively.

CAL FIRE’s Broader Commitment to Innovation

  • CAL FIRE uses AI and satellite technology to detect and respond to wildfires quickly.
  • In partnership with UC San Diego, CAL FIRE was recognized by TIME magazine in 2023 for its AI wildfire detection system monitoring over 1,000 cameras.
  • The state has expanded its aerial firefighting fleet, including night-capable Fire Hawk helicopters, enhancing response capabilities.

Investing in Wildfire Prevention

California has nearly doubled its budget for CAL FIRE since 2019 and increased wildfire prevention efforts significantly. While the state manages only 3% of forestland, over 2,200 prevention projects are underway or completed on state lands. Approximately 2 million acres have been treated to reduce wildfire risk.

Accessing the Chatbot and Resources

Public workers and officials can visit fire.ca.gov to try the chatbot and access comprehensive wildfire preparedness materials for homes and communities.
