Canadian Government Partners with AI Startup Cohere Inc.
The Canadian government has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Toronto-based artificial intelligence startup Cohere Inc. This agreement focuses on advancing Canadian AI technologies and exploring practical applications that can improve government operations.
Evan Solomon, Canada’s Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation as well as the Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, emphasized the local advantage. “There’s no better place to leverage the innovative technology of artificial intelligence than here in our own backyard, and no better use than in the service of Canadians from coast to coast to coast,” Solomon said.
He highlighted that collaborating with Canadian AI innovators like Cohere will help create a more efficient and productive public service while keeping Canada competitive in the digital era.
About Cohere Inc.
Founded in 2019, Cohere is valued at US$6.8 billion and specializes in building AI models. The company has partnerships with major Canadian and international firms including Dell, Oracle, RBC, and Bell.
Cohere’s CEO, Aidan Gomez, stated: “AI will supercharge economic productivity, fortify national security and future-proof Canada’s competitiveness. That’s why building this technology and developing the next generation of AI talent right here in Canada is essential.”
Government’s AI Strategy
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration has prioritized AI’s economic potential, committing resources to AI training, adoption, and commercialization. This MOU with Cohere is part of that broader push.
Joël Lightbound, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement, pointed out the importance of sovereign AI. “This MOU with Cohere is an opportunity to explore how sovereign AI can strengthen public services, protect our digital sovereignty and create opportunities for Canadians,” he said.
Lightbound emphasized that working with domestic innovators ensures AI technologies are developed and deployed responsibly. It also helps position the Government of Canada as a strong customer for Canadian AI solutions.
