Character.AI Introduces New Multimedia Features

Character.AI, a platform known for AI-generated characters and role-playing chats, recently announced several multimedia updates. These include AvatarFX, a video-generation tool, along with Scenes and Streams—features that let users create and share videos of their characters on a new social feed.

Originally focused on one-on-one text chats, the platform is evolving based on user feedback to offer richer, more interactive experiences.

What’s New: AvatarFX, Scenes, and Streams

AvatarFX lets users create videos by uploading a photo, selecting a voice, and writing dialogue for their AI character. While users can also upload audio clips to influence voice style, this feature is still being refined.

Since last month, subscribers could access AvatarFX, but now all users can create up to five videos daily. These videos can then be turned into Scenes—pre-made storylines where characters interact. Scenes are currently available on mobile devices.

Streams, which enable dynamic interactions between any two characters, will launch soon on both web and mobile platforms. All these creations can be shared on a new community feed coming to the mobile app.

Safety Concerns and Content Moderation

Character.AI has faced serious challenges regarding abuse on its platform, including lawsuits claiming chatbots encouraged harmful behavior among minors. One tragic case involved a 14-year-old who died by suicide after forming an unhealthy attachment to a chatbot.

With the rollout of multimedia features, the risk of misuse increases. To address this, Character.AI blocks uploads of real people's photos and alters images to reduce recognizability. For example, celebrity photos are modified to avoid creating realistic deepfakes.

Artistic depictions of celebrities, however, aren’t flagged since they are less likely to mislead viewers. Videos are watermarked, but bad actors might still find ways to bypass these safeguards.

Examples of Generated Content

  • An altered image of Mark Zuckerberg demonstrates how the platform obscures real faces.
  • A video based on an illustration of Elon Musk highlights that even with voice replication, the content remains clearly animated, though potential for misuse remains.

Looking Ahead

Character.AI aims to balance creativity with safety, providing a space where users can engage with AI characters in new and exciting ways without compromising on security.
