China Unicom’s Bold Move in AI Computing Infrastructure
China Unicom has announced an ambitious plan to advance its intelligent computing capabilities. The company aims to deploy a 100,000-GPU cluster and reach 45 EFLOPS of computing power by the end of 2025. For context, EFLOPS measure the speed of computer systems, with 1 EFLOPS equaling 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second.
This initiative, unveiled by Chen Zhongyue, chairman of China Unicom, at a recent partner conference in Shanghai, is set to position the company among the leaders in AI computing performance worldwide.
Upgrading Network Infrastructure for AI Integration
Alongside the GPU cluster deployment, China Unicom is upgrading its Computing Power Intelligence Network. The focus is on adopting ultra-high-speed bandwidth technologies such as 800G and 1.2T to improve interoperability across different system architectures, organizational boundaries, and geographic locations.
The upgrades will also boost network autonomy, enabling it to self-configure, self-optimize, and self-heal. This approach is expected to enhance operational efficiency and improve the user experience significantly.
AI Agents: Core to Commercial Value
Chen emphasized the importance of AI agents in realizing commercial benefits, stating, “AI agents are key to unlocking commercial value.” To support this, China Unicom has developed the Yuanjing Wanwu AI Agent Development Platform.
- This platform provides tools for model management, knowledge base construction, and workflow orchestration.
- It supports zero-code and low-code development, lowering barriers for partners to build sophisticated AI applications.
- The platform accelerates the time-to-market for intelligent solutions that can deliver real business results.
Launching “Tongtong Huigou” Enterprise Procurement Marketplace
The conference also introduced "Tongtong Huigou", a new B2B procurement marketplace connecting 50,000 suppliers with millions of corporate buyers. This platform builds on the success of China Unicom’s Partner Service Plan, launched last year.
Since its inception, the procurement ecosystem has:
- Served over 40,000 enterprises
- Facilitated annual transactions exceeding 130 billion yuan (around $17.9 billion)
- Improved order processing efficiency by 15%
What This Means for Operations Professionals
For those working in operations, China Unicom’s strategy signals a shift towards highly automated and intelligent network management. The integration of AI agents and high-capacity computing infrastructure will streamline workflows, reduce manual intervention, and enhance system resilience.
Organizations can expect faster, more reliable network services that support complex AI workloads, improving overall efficiency and responsiveness.
Operations teams should watch how AI-driven automation and zero-code development platforms like Yuanjing Wanwu enable faster deployment of AI solutions, reducing dependency on specialized coding skills.
