China’s Internet Giants Adopt AI Content Labels as New Regulations Take Effect
Leading Chinese platforms like WeChat and Xiaohongshu now label AI-generated content to comply with new regulations. This ensures transparency and helps curb misinformation in digital media.

China’s Major Internet Platforms Implement AI Content Labeling Ahead of New Regulation
Several leading Chinese internet platforms have begun labeling content generated or synthesized by artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative aims to help users easily identify AI-produced materials and complies with a new regulation coming into effect on Monday, designed to support public interest and the sustainable development of the AI sector.
Platform Actions on AI Content Identification
WeChat, a widely used messaging and social media app by Tencent, announced enhanced content recognition features. The platform will include explicit or implicit labels on AI-generated synthetic content. Users are also required to declare proactively if their posts contain AI-generated material, ensuring transparency and preventing confusion.
Yuanbao, Tencent’s AI chatbot, has set up an AI-generated content labeling management system. It adds clear labels to AI content and reminds users to maintain label integrity when sharing content online. The platform will also add prominent prompts if AI-generated content is detected without prior labeling.
Regulatory Background and Industry Impact
The rapid advancement of generative AI and deep synthesis technologies has brought economic benefits and convenience but also challenges like misinformation and ecosystem disruption. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) and other authorities introduced the Measures for Identifying AI-Generated Synthetic Content in March 2025, effective Monday.
The regulation mandates platforms to attach clear labels to AI-generated content to promote healthy AI development and standardize content identification. It forbids malicious removal, alteration, or concealment of AI content identifiers and prohibits tools or services that facilitate such misconduct.
Industry Expert Insight
Security risks such as disinformation, online fraud, and public opinion manipulation from AI deepfake technology are significant concerns. Marking AI content with a “digital ID” alerts the public and raises barriers to malicious dissemination. This approach helps reduce harm by addressing issues at their source.
Other Platforms Joining the Initiative
- Xiaohongshu (RedNote), a popular social media platform, launched identification features to help users distinguish AI-generated content. Users can declare AI content when posting, and the platform may add labels if content is not proactively marked. Malicious removal or alteration of labels is prohibited.
- Bilibili, a leading Chinese video-sharing site, allows content creators to voluntarily declare AI-generated content during upload. The platform provides an easy option to add AI content identifiers in the publishing interface.
Looking Ahead
The implementation of this regulation safeguards the public’s right to know and provides clear guidelines for industry compliance. It reflects a responsible approach to AI governance and supports a structured, transparent expansion of AI technologies in digital content.
For professionals working with AI technologies or developing digital platforms, understanding these labeling requirements is critical. They ensure legal compliance and help maintain trust in AI-generated content.
