DOST Launches 2025 Artificial Intelligence Fest in Iloilo City

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) initiated the 2025 national Artificial Intelligence (AI) Fest in Iloilo City on August 11. This three-day event focuses on advancing AI development across the Philippines.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasized the importance of innovation driven by science and tailored to local conditions. He highlighted the department’s investment of PHP2.3 billion since 2017 in 113 AI research and development projects. A key announcement was the presentation of the National AI Strategy for the Philippines (NAIS PH), which will guide AI efforts through 2028.

Highlights of the AI Fest Opening

The event opened with an exhibit featuring AI innovations, organized in partnership with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry - Iloilo. Four AI projects were launched to demonstrate practical applications of AI across sectors.

  • Talino.AI – A technical assistant designed to help users access DOST’s technologies, services, and networking opportunities. It aims to improve service delivery for various professions and vocations.
  • SmartGrid.AI – Developed by Iloilo Science and Technology University and More Electric and Power Corporation, this project optimizes and manages power distribution, marking a pioneering collaboration between academia and the private sector.
  • AI Ready ASEAN Training Program – In partnership with the ASEAN Youth Organization, this program offers comprehensive training on AI literacy and responsible use to build strong human capital in the region.
  • AWS AI Innovation Sandbox – A platform created with Amazon Web Services for AI-related web development, providing a space for experimentation and innovation.

DOST Regional Director for Western Visayas Rowen Gelonga noted that these projects aim to foster ethical and responsive AI not only locally but across the country.

Event Activities and Focus

The fest’s theme, "Coding a Better Future: Responsible AI for Cities and Communities," highlights practical AI applications in various fields. Activities include:

  • SineAI – Workshops on using AI in filmmaking and the creative industry
  • AI Hackathon – A nationwide competition showcasing student AI innovations and connecting them with experts and industry leaders
  • AI Exhibits – Displays of national and international AI projects
  • Technical Conference – Plenary discussions addressing AI technologies, governance, and ethical concerns

Key officials present at the opening ceremony included DOST Undersecretaries Sancho Mabborang and Leah Buendia, Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges president Dr. Tirso Ronquillo, Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas, and Iloilo Vice Governor Lee Ann Debuque.
