Partnership Initiatives for National AI Development
JAKARTA – The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) is actively pursuing collaboration with SAP, a global technology leader, to advance Indonesia’s national artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives. This partnership focuses on ethical AI development that complies with regulations and protects data sovereignty.
During a meeting with Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria from SAP expressed readiness to support the implementation of the Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP). SAP also reaffirmed its commitment to Indonesia’s “One Data Policy,” as outlined in Government Regulation No. 39 of 2019.
Strategic Importance of the Indonesian Market
SAP highlighted Indonesia's strategic position in their global operations. The company sees value in assisting the government to draft AI policies, apply them across public sectors, and build cross-institutional capabilities. Nezar stressed that partnerships like this are essential to ensure Indonesia’s digital transformation progresses swiftly while respecting digital sovereignty and public trust.
Government Support and Collaboration Framework
Kemkomdigi welcomes SAP’s offer to support policy reforms by deploying country experts who will work across sectors. Additionally, SAP will back the application of AI technology in national priority areas.
Key sectors targeted for AI development include:
- AI-driven public services
- Smart agricultural systems
- Digitization of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)
To proceed, Kemkomdigi will coordinate with the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) and other stakeholders to assess technical and regulatory readiness. The goal is to design a research-driven, multi-sector cooperation model. This approach aims to build a sustainable partnership that accelerates Indonesia’s digital transformation while upholding ethics, security, and sustainability.
For government professionals interested in AI policy and implementation, staying informed about such collaborations is key to aligning national priorities with technological progress.
