Colombia launches sovereign AI strategy to reduce dependence on foreign platforms
Colombia's Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies (MinTIC) has launched a governance model designed to build local artificial intelligence capabilities and reduce the country's reliance on foreign AI platforms and development.
The strategy focuses on four core areas: infrastructure development, regulation, talent cultivation, and ethical AI use. The goal is to create a domestic ecosystem capable of developing solutions tailored to Colombian needs while strengthening digital competitiveness.
MinTIC is coordinating the effort across public entities, academia, the private sector, and civil society to establish guidelines and priorities for AI development. The model also addresses data protection, transparency, cybersecurity, and responsible technology deployment.
Colombia joins other Latin American countries pursuing similar technological sovereignty initiatives. The regional shift reflects growing concern about dependency on external platforms for critical digital infrastructure.
What this means for IT professionals
The initiative creates opportunities for developers and IT teams to build infrastructure and solutions within a coordinated national framework. Professionals working on AI for IT & Development will likely find expanded roles in implementing local systems and training domestic talent.
Understanding Generative AI and LLM capabilities becomes more relevant as organizations develop locally-focused applications rather than relying solely on international platforms.
