DC Mandates Generative AI Training for Every Government Employee
Washington, DC is now one of the first cities to require generative AI training for its entire government workforce. The two-part course, delivered by InnovateUS, focuses on prompting basics and the risks that come with using the tech. The mandate applies across agencies and roles - including teachers, unemployment claims examiners, city council staff - and includes city contractors.
Employees have 90 days from notification to complete both parts. Notifications to complete the training went out this morning.

- Sets clear standards so staff can use AI responsibly and consistently
- Reduces risk exposure around privacy, security, and accuracy
- Frees up time on routine work while reinforcing data handling rules
- Backs DC's AI Values Alignment effort, centered on privacy and transparency
- Agencies looking to coordinate rollout and governance can supplement this program with role-specific learning paths for CIOs and project leads
Context and regional momentum
Several regional and municipal governments have partnered with InnovateUS, including Montgomery County, MD. At the city level, Hope, AK, requires mandatory training before employees use AI tools for official work. DC stands out by making training a universal requirement for every worker.
